Q1 Why are lasers in classes higher than 1, 2 and 3R unsuitable as pointers for presentations?

A1 Firstly, higher power lasers have the potential to be dangerous and should only be used by people aware of the potential dangers.
In addition to safety considerations, high power lasers are not even suitable for professional use because they cause after images in people viewing the beam on a projection screen.
Those close to the screen may also experience a grey 'comet tail' following the beam as it is moved across the screen.
The following image compares  a 3B laser with a 3R laser at ~ 2 metres, clearly the brighter 3B laser is too bright with too much light spill to be effective as a pointer:



Q2 Why are green lasers brighter than red lasers ?

A2 The human eye is much more sensitive to green light so a green laser appears brighter than the same power red  or blu-ray laser.

Q3 What are the common 'pointing type' applications for higher power lasers ?

A3 Professional uses range from architects and construction workers who may need to identify a feature on a large building in daylight conditions to display organisers who want to predict the trajectory of aerial fireworks such as rockets. Another popular application is astronomy:
